I have been burgled – what should I do?
Being burgled can be upsetting. Your safety comes first, followed by reporting the incident and contacting your insurer.
- Make sure you are safe. If the burglary is happening now, you think an intruder is still there, or anyone is in immediate danger, move to a safe place and call 999. Do not enter your home if you think someone may still be inside.
- Report the burglary to the police. If it is not an emergency, call 101 or report it through your local police force’s website. Keep the crime reference number for your insurance claim.
- Avoid disturbing evidence. Try not to touch, move or clean anything the intruder may have handled. Follow the police’s advice before tidying up or repairing damaged doors and windows.
-
Contact your insurer as soon as possible. If your policy is arranged through Intelligent Insurance, check your policy schedule for your insurer’s details. You can also visit our Claims & Emergency Helplines page.
Have your policy number and crime reference number ready. - Ask about securing your home. Tell the police and your insurer if damaged locks, doors or windows have left your home insecure. Ask about urgent temporary repairs and check with your insurer before arranging permanent work. Keep receipts for any work undertaken.
- Record what is missing or damaged. When the police say it is safe to do so, make a list and take photographs of the damage. Gather any receipts, photographs or bank statements that could help establish ownership and value. If bank cards have been stolen, contact your bank immediately.
Your insurer’s claims team will explain the next steps and confirm what your policy covers, including any applicable excess, limits and conditions.
