Bicycle cover for different bikes and riders
From an everyday bicycle to a higher-value road, mountain or electric bike, the right cover depends on the cycle itself and how it is used. Intelligent Insurance is a specialist home insurance broker, and we work with a panel of insurers to find suitable home and contents cover for a wide range of circumstances.
Pedal-cycle cover is optional and must be shown in your policy schedule. Depending on the insurer and the cover agreed, it can include:
- Accidental loss of or damage to individually listed bicycles
- Theft, subject to the policy’s security requirements
- Pedal cycles and qualifying electrically assisted pedal cycles
- Cover within the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man
- Worldwide cover where this has been selected and agreed
- More than one bicycle, with each cycle listed separately
How bicycle cover works
Tell us about each bicycle
We will need information about each cycle you want to insure, including its type and value.
You should provide an accurate replacement value so that the insurer can assess the cover required.
Choose where you need cover
Tell us whether you need cover only within the UK or for trips overseas. Wider territorial cover must be agreed with the insurer and shown in your policy schedule.
Check your schedule and conditions
Your schedule confirms the bicycles insured, the amount of cover applying to each one, the territorial limits and the excess.
You should also check any security requirements or endorsements before using or storing your bicycle away from home.
Cover based on the value of your bicycle
There is no single maximum bicycle value across our panel. Instead, insurers consider the value of each cycle alongside factors such as your location, storage arrangements and individual circumstances.
This means we may be able to consider bicycles across a wide range of values, including higher-value cycles. However, acceptance cannot be guaranteed, and the cover limit and terms offered will depend on the insurer.
Each bicycle must be listed separately with an agreed value. The most the insurer will pay for a covered claim is based on the amount shown for that bicycle in your policy schedule.
Providing an accurate value is important because a claim may be reduced if the cycle is underinsured.
No universal value cap

Each bicycle listed separately
The description and agreed value of every insured bicycle will appear in your policy schedule.
Individually assessed
Availability and terms depend on the bicycle, property location, insurer and individual circumstances.
Security requirements when you are away from home
Bicycle theft cover is subject to the security conditions in your policy. When a bicycle is left in a public place, it must be secured to a permanent structure or motor vehicle using a chain and padlock or another equivalent lock agreed by us and the insurer in writing.
It is also sensible to retain information that may help establish ownership and value if you need to claim. This may include:
- The original purchase receipt or other proof of purchase
- The bicycle’s make, model and frame number
- Clear photographs of the bicycle
- Details of upgrades or permanently fitted accessories
- Police report details following a theft
Home insurance bicycle cover or standalone bicycle insurance?
Bicycle cover through home insurance
Adding pedal-cycle cover to your contents insurance allows your home and bicycles to be insured under the same policy.
It may be suitable if you mainly use your bicycle for personal journeys and want cover for accidental loss, damage and theft, subject to the terms of the policy.
Standalone bicycle insurance
A specialist standalone policy may offer features aimed specifically at cyclists, such as racing cover, cycle breakdown assistance or other cycling-related benefits.
These features are not automatically included with home insurance bicycle cover.
The right option depends on the bicycle, how you use it and the protection you need.
Check the cover, exclusions, excesses and security requirements rather than comparing price alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Under the home insurance cover arranged by Intelligent Insurance, bicycles are not automatically insured under the standard contents section. You must select optional pedal-cycle cover and list each bicycle individually. The cover only applies when it is shown in your policy schedule.
Cover can be arranged for pedal cycles and qualifying electrically assisted pedal cycles. An electric bike must meet the relevant legal requirements for an electrically assisted pedal cycle.
Other electrically powered cycles or vehicles may not qualify.
There is no single maximum value across our panel. The value an insurer is prepared to cover will depend on factors including your location, storage arrangements, circumstances and the insurer’s criteria. Each bicycle and its agreed insured value will be shown in your policy schedule.
Yes, subject to the insurer’s criteria. Each bicycle must be listed separately with its own description and value so that the cover applying to it is clear.
It can, provided the bicycle is covered in the location where the theft occurs and the policy’s security conditions have been met. In a public place, this includes securing the bicycle to a permanent structure or motor vehicle using the required lock.
Yes, worldwide cover may be available. Overseas cover must be selected and agreed with the insurer, and the territorial limits will be shown in your policy schedule. Do not assume that a bicycle is covered abroad unless your documents confirm it.
Cover may apply when a bicycle is stored in a garage or outbuilding, subject to the policy terms and any security requirements. Check your schedule and endorsements for the conditions applying to your property and bicycle.
No. Loss or damage while a bicycle is being used for, or while practising for, racing, pacemaking or testing is excluded under the current pedal-cycle cover.
Cycles mainly used for business, trade, a profession or employment are not covered under the current pedal-cycle section. Tell us how you use the bicycle so we can confirm whether the available cover is suitable.
Accessories or bicycle parts are not normally covered on their own. They may be covered when the bicycle itself is stolen or damaged at the same time, subject to the policy terms and insured value.
The insurer may request evidence such as a purchase receipt, bank or card statement, photographs, the bicycle’s frame number, police report details or repair estimates. Keeping an up-to-date record of each bicycle can make this information easier to provide.

Add-Ons
How to make a bicycle claim
Making a claim has never been easier – just follow these three simple steps:
Step One – Check Your Policy
Confirm that the bicycle is listed and check the insured value, excess, territorial cover and any security requirements. Your schedule also contains the claims contact details for your insurer.
Step Two – Report the Incident
Contact your insurer’s claims team as soon as possible. If your bicycle has been lost or stolen, or you suspect malicious damage, report the incident to the police within seven days and retain the crime or incident reference.
Step Three – Provide the requested evidence
Your insurer may ask for receipts, photographs, bank or card statements, police report details or repair estimates. If a claim form is required, return it with the requested information within the timescale set out in your policy wording.
*We may not be able to quote in all circumstances. Cover limits/restrictions and/or conditions may apply to the policy. These are clearly detailed prior to purchase, and in the policy documentation for you to determine if the cover is suitable for your needs.
