Frequently Asked Questions

Personal belongings insurance complements home contents insurance by offering extended protection for your possessions, not just within your home but also when you’re on the move. While home contents insurance typically covers your belongings against risks like theft, fire, and water damage within the confines of your home, personal belongings insurance takes that coverage further, protecting items you frequently use outside the home, such as laptops, smartphones, jewellery, and apparel.

This additional layer of insurance is especially beneficial for items that are at a higher risk of loss, theft, or damage when taken outside. It ensures that your most valued possessions are safeguarded, whether you’re at home, at work, or on holiday. To ensure comprehensive coverage, it’s essential to review both your home contents and personal belongings policies to understand the extent of protection each offers and to make sure there are no unnecessary overlaps or gaps in coverage.

Coverage for personal belongings is available as an add-on to your policy at an extra cost. If you already hold a buildings or contents insurance policy with us, you can modify it whenever necessary. This can be achieved by contacting our team through live chat or by using the ‘Amend My Policy‘ form provided for adjustments.

The term ‘new for old’ refers to an insurance policy feature where, in the event of a claim for a damaged or lost item, your insurer replaces it with a new item of the same kind and quality, rather than compensating you based on the item’s depreciated or second-hand value. This ensures that you can replace your belongings with new ones, without having to contribute towards the replacement cost, other than the excess indicated on your policy.

At Intelligent Insurance, we offer a generous default coverage limit of £2000 for each personal item. For items valued above £2000, they need to be individually listed on your policy to ensure they are adequately insured.

Note, if any of your items are used for business purposes, they won’t be covered under a personal belongings insurance policy.

Certainly! For second-hand belongings, coverage is provided under your policy. However, in the event of a claim, you may be required to present evidence of both value and ownership. Hence, it’s crucial to retain receipts for all your acquisitions to ensure a smooth claims process.

Yes, your personal belongings are covered in Europe without any specific time limit. For other locations around the world, coverage extends up to a maximum of 60 days within each insurance period. This ensures protection for your items while traveling, with specific coverage durations depending on your destination.

Having an up-to-date valuation of personal items such as jewellery is crucial for effective insurance coverage. We advise having your jewellery valued by a certified professional every few years to reflect its current market value accurately. This practice guarantees that, in the event of a loss, you receive appropriate compensation. Store these valuations and any purchase receipts securely, as they will be essential for supporting your claim
