Do you cover items in storage?
If you mean items kept in a commercial self-storage unit or warehouse, you should not assume they are covered by your home contents insurance. Our published home insurance policy booklet excludes belongings taken out of the home to be kept in a commercial storage facility. Check the wording that applies to your own policy.
This can apply even if you are only using storage temporarily, such as during a house move or renovation. Cover for belongings being transported does not necessarily include cover while they are in storage.
What about items stored in my garage or shed?
Belongings kept in a garage, shed or other domestic outbuilding within your property’s boundaries may be covered by your contents insurance. However, limits, exclusions and security conditions can apply, particularly for theft.
What should I do before putting belongings into storage?
Contact our team with details of where the items will be stored, their approximate total value and how long they will be there. We can check what your policy covers.
You may need separate storage insurance. Ask the storage provider what protection is available and check the insured value, excess, exclusions and any restrictions on valuable or fragile items before relying on it.
