Does home insurance cover hearing aids?
Quick answer (TL;DR)
- Yes, your hearing aids are treated as Contents and are covered for fire, theft, storm, escape of water and the other insured perils while they’re in your home.
- They’re also covered when you’re out and about if you have added the optional Personal Belongings cover.
- If the aids are on loan from the NHS or a charity, they’re still protected under our special “Medical Equipment on loan” benefit.
How the policy treats hearing aids
Situation | Where the cover sits | Key limits & conditions |
---|---|---|
Owned hearing aids, in the home | Standard Contents section (they’re household goods) | Covered up to the Contents maximum claim limit shown on your Schedule; no single-item limit because hearing aids aren’t High-Risk Property |
Owned hearing aids, outside the home | Personal Belongings – See Section 2b (optional) | Worldwide for up to 60 days; single-item limit = the amount shown in your Schedule for Personal Belongings |
Loaned hearing aids from the NHS or a charity | Medical Equipment on loan extension within Contents | Covered inside the home for perils 1-9 up to the “Medical Equipment” limit in your Schedule. |
Why no single-article limit in the home?
A single-article limit applies only to items classed as High-Risk Property (jewellery, watches, art, etc.).
Hearing aids aren’t on that list and the policy states that items not classed as High-Risk Property do not need to be individually specified or capped.
What isn’t covered
- Wear & tear, electrical or mechanical breakdown, and gradual deterioration are excluded for Personal Belongings/Contents.
- Unspecified high-value aids: If a single device costs more than your policy’s single-item limit, list it as Specified Contents so the full value is protected (see “High-risk & Specified Contents” guide).
- Loss away from home without Personal Belongings cover: add that optional section if you regularly travel with your aids.
Tip: If you rely on your aids daily, consider keeping a back-up pair so you’re not without hearing while a claim is processed.
